Blog Introduction: The Dallas Stars are a professional ice hockey team based in Dallas, Texas. They are members of the Central Division of the Western Conference of the National Hockey League (NHL). The team was founded during the 1967 NHL expansion as the Minnesota North Stars, based in Bloomington, Minnesota. Before the beginning of the 1978–79 NHL season, the team merged with the Cleveland Barons after the league granted them permission due to each franchise being unable to secure a suitable arena in their respective cities. Ultimately, the franchise relocated to Dallas for the 1993–94 NHL season. The Stars played out of Reunion Arena from their relocation until 2001, when they moved to American Airlines Center.
The Dallas Stars have won seven division titles in 26 seasons since moving to Dallas, two Presidents' Trophies as the top regular season team in 1998–99 and 1999–2000, the Western Conference championship twice – in 1998–99 and again in 1999–2000, and were Stanley Cup champions in 1998–99. An incredibly successful start to their time in Dallas, which has led to a large and loyal fan base.
Records and accomplishments held by Dallas Stars players include several individual NHL awards. Mike Modano is both the franchise scoring and games played leader for the Dallas Stars. He holds almost every offensive record for Dallas Stars/Minnesota North Stars since joining the NHL in 1989. Brenden Morrow is the only captain since 1999 while Marty Turco is their all-time leader among goaltenders in wins, games played, shutouts and save percentage while Sergei Zubov has more assists than any other defenseman in franchise history. Bill Masterton, Brad Richards and Neal Broten have all won the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy while Richards also won both Hart Memorial Trophy as league MVP and Conn Smythe Trophy as playoffs MVP during his tenure with Dallas. In total, eight former players have been inducted into either the United States Hockey Hall of Fame or Hockey Hall of Fame. Together with Anaheim Ducks (formerly Mighty Ducks of Anaheim), Florida Panthers (formerly Miami Dolphins), Nashville Predators (formerly Nashville Knights) and Phoenix Coyotes (formerly Winnipeg Jets), these four teams make up what is currently known as original or classic six franchises within NHL as they were all established prior to 1967's Expansions. Of these four teams that share this honor withDallas , only one other – Detroit Red Wings – has also won Stanley Cup since 1967's Expansions.
Whether you’re a fan of hockey or not, it’s hard not to respect what the Dallas Stars have accomplished in such a short amount of time – especially when compared to other teams who have been around for just as long or longer. With 7 division titles under their belt and 2 Stanley Cup wins, there’s no doubt that they’ve made their mark on the sport – and on Dallas itself. If you’re looking for a team to support, you could do a whole lot worse than cheering onthe Dallas Stars.
